Los mejores complejos turísticos de bienestar de lujo de Costa Rica para 2026-2027

Costa Rica is the rare destination where wellness can happen almost accidentally. You arrive, spend most of the day outside, sleep when it gets dark and realize sometime around day three that your shoulders are no longer trying to become earrings.

It also offers several completely different versions of a wellness trip. Hacienda AltaGracia is a true destination retreat, with days shaped around personalized programming and very little reason to leave. Four Seasons and Nekajui are beach resorts with excellent spas, but wellness is only one part of the vacation. Nayara and Tabacón use Arenal’s thermal water and rainforest setting to make soaking feel less like an appointment and more like the natural order of things.

Those distinctions matter. A traveler who needs five quiet days and someone who needs surfing, a kids club and one very good massage are not looking for the same hotel, even if both typed “Costa Rica wellness resort” into Google after a difficult Tuesday.

I have stayed at Nayara, Four Seasons Costa Rica and Nekajui, and I book Costa Rica often. For the other properties, this is researched guidance rather than pretend firsthand experience. The goal is not to crown one universally restorative winner. It is to match the right kind of wellness with the trip you actually want.

Why Costa Rica Works for Wellness (Without Trying Too Hard)

Luxury Fora travel advisor, Kate Van Dell, experiencing the experiencing the thermal pools surrounded by lush green jungle during a stay at Nayara in Costa Rica.

Taking in the jungle views and thermal springs during my stay at Nayara. There is no substitute for experiencing these wellness properties first-hand so I know exactly what to recommend to my clients.

First decide what kind of wellness trip you want

There are three broad categories here, and choosing among them is more useful than comparing treatment menus.

A true destination wellness retreat

Choose Hacienda AltaGracia or The Retreat when wellness is the main reason for traveling. AltaGracia is the more expansive and highly personalized choice, while The Retreat is smaller, more structured and easier to reach from San José.

These are the places to consider when you want meals, movement, treatments and the daily schedule working toward the same purpose. You can still read by the pool and enjoy dinner. Nobody will confiscate dessert because you failed to meditate correctly,

A luxury resort with a serious spa

Choose Four Seasons Costa Rica or Nekajui when everyone needs a proper vacation and only some people want the wellness component to be central. Both have substantial spas and thoughtful programming, but they also have beaches, pools, restaurants, excursions and enough infrastructure to keep a family happy.

Four Seasons is easier and more energetic. Nekajui is quieter, more design-led and more theatrical in its spa experience. I have stayed at both, and they create different trips despite sharing the same peninsula.

Nature, movement and thermal water

Choose Nayara, Tabacón or Rio Perdido when the environment is the treatment. This version of wellness includes walking through rainforest, soaking in naturally heated water, noticing wildlife and becoming pleasantly tired for reasons unrelated to email.

Nantipa belongs here too, but with the Pacific replacing the volcano. It is for travelers who feel better after surfing, walking the beach and spending most of the day outside, without needing a practitioner to explain what the day meant.

The adults only spa pool at Nekajui has breathtaking views

If you feel best after moving your body, Rio Perdido is the standout. Canyon hikes, mountain biking, open-air yoga and thermal pools create a wellness trip built around movement rather than scheduled introspection.

If you want hot springs and the kind of evening where steam rises into the canopy and you stop forming opinions about anything, Nayara Tented Camp. If you want that same energy with a slightly more adventurous edge, Tabacón is the original and still the benchmark. For a multi-generational group that spans grandparents to teenagers, Four Seasons and Nayara Gardens both handle the mix without anyone having to compromise too much.

If you want beach-forward wellness without a schedule or anyone asking you to set an intention, Nantipa on the Nicoya Peninsula is relaxed in a way that feels earned. And if you need a solo reset with structure, kindness, and someone else making decisions for a few days, The Retreat was built for exactly that.

Hacienda AltaGracia: the best all-around luxury wellness retreat

Hacienda AltaGracia is the clearest answer when wellness is not an amenity but the point of the trip. The resort sits in the Talamanca Mountains on a large private estate, with casitas, horses, gardens and enough distance from ordinary life to make checking email feel vaguely inappropriate.

Stays are structured more holistically than at a conventional resort. Current rates include meals and nonalcoholic drinks, daily wellness and adventure programming, and a dedicated Compa who helps shape the stay. The programming can include movement, meditation, time outdoors and treatments at THE WELL, but the experience is personalized rather than delivered as one rigid cure for every exhausted person who arrives.

This is where I would send someone who says she is tired when what she really means is depleted. It works for couples who want to reconnect, solo travelers who do not want wellness to feel lonely, and anyone who needs the decisions temporarily taken off her desk.

The practical story has improved considerably. AltaGracia is remote, but eligible stays currently include scheduled shared charter flights from SJO directly to the resort’s own airstrip, generally offered twice daily. That turns what was once a long drive into a much cleaner arrival, although flight schedules, weather conditions and the specific inclusions for your rate still need to be confirmed.

I would allow at least four nights. Three can feel like you arrived, exhaled and immediately began discussing departure. Five gives the experience time to work without turning the schedule into another ambitious project.

Choose AltaGracia for deep rest, personalized wellness, solo travel and couples who want the resort to hold the entire trip. Do not choose it if what you really want is a beach vacation with one excellent massage.

Nayara Gardens & Tented Camp: Hot Springs & Jungle Wellness in Arenal

The Yoga Shala at Nayara Springs taken by Luxury Travel Advisor, Kate Van Dell

Early morning yoga class at the Yoga Shala at Nayara Springs. Peaceful and restorative.

Best for romance, nature immersion, luxury hot springs

Nayara has very strong opinions about soaking, and they are right. Hot spring pools are woven throughout the property, so wellness becomes part of the rhythm of the day rather than a scheduled activity. Steam rises at dusk. Wildlife wanders through casually. No one seems to be in a rush.

Nayara Gardens feels lush, classic, and welcoming. It’s a beautiful option for families or couples who want ease and comfort with a strong nature component.

Nayara Tented Camp is more immersive and more cocooned. Elevated tented suites feel private and romantic, many with outdoor soaking tubs and rainforest views. This is the version you choose when you want to feel wrapped in nature but still care deeply about linens.

If we were planning our next family jungle trip, this would absolutely be one of the top contenders.

Four Seasons Costa Rica: Family-Friendly Luxury Spa Resort on Peninsula Papagayo

Best for families, couples, wellness plus beach time

The Four Seasons Papagayo is one of those places that genuinely works for everyone. We’ve stayed here, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a strong choice for families who still want real wellness.

The spa incorporates indigenous healing traditions alongside modern treatments, but nothing feels heavy or overly serious. You can do yoga in the morning, spa in the afternoon, spend the rest of the day at the pool or beach, and still feel like you took care of yourself without making wellness the entire point of the trip.

If you want more detail, I’ve written a full review of our stay that goes deeper into rooms, dining, and what it’s actually like with kids.

Nekajui

The adults only spa pool at Nekajui with breathtaking views.

Best for dramatic views, design lovers, elevated spa experiences

Nekajui, one of only 8 Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties in the world, is visually striking in a way that stops you mid-thought. Perched high above the Pacific, the architecture and landscape work together to create a sense of awe without tipping into spectacle.

We’ve stayed here as well, and the spa experience is one of the most immersive in Costa Rica. Treatments feel ceremonial and intentional, with a real emphasis on ritual, movement, and presence. Wellness here has substance, not just atmosphere.

It’s especially strong for families with older kids or adults who appreciate space, design, and a sense of occasion.

For a direct comparison between the two heavyweights, read my breakdown of Nekajui vs. Four Seasons.

Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa

Best for hot springs, slowing down, elemental wellness

Tabacón is the hot springs benchmark in Costa Rica. Naturally heated mineral water flows directly from the Arenal Volcano into winding rivers and pools surrounded by dense jungle.

The spa treatments are excellent, but the real magic is the soaking. Early morning, when the steam rises quietly. Late afternoon, when the light softens. Again the next day, because you can.

If we were choosing between jungle wellness experiences for a future family trip, Tabacón would absolutely be in the running.

Rio Perdido

Best for active wellness, outdoor lovers, solo trips

Rio Perdido is for people who feel best when they’ve moved their bodies. Canyon hikes, suspension bridges, open-air yoga, and thermal pools create days that feel active without being exhausting.

This is not a lying-down-all-day place, but it’s deeply satisfying. You sleep well. You eat well. You feel quietly accomplished without having to prove anything. This is for someone who enjoys luxury that feels a bit rustic at the same time.

The Retreat Costa Rica: Solo Wellness & Burnout Recovery Near San José

Best for intentional resets, solo travel, burnout recovery

The Retreat is purpose-built for wellness, with a gentle daily rhythm of yoga, meditation, spa treatments, and thoughtfully prepared meals that support rather than restrict.

This is a strong choice if you want structure without intensity and a reset that feels kind. It’s especially well suited to solo travelers or anyone coming out of a demanding season.

Nantipa

Best for beach lovers, surf culture, casual wellness

Nantipa blends surf culture with boutique luxury in a way that feels effortless. Wellness here looks like sunrise yoga, long beach walks, surf sessions, and spa treatments that fit naturally into the day.

Nantipa is located on the Nicoya Peninsula, one of the world’s Blue Zones, making it a natural fit for travelers drawn to longevity-focused wellness and an easy, movement-rich lifestyle.

If we were planning our next family beach-forward wellness trip, Nantipa would be at the top of the list alongside Nayara Gardens. Relaxed, youthful, and unfussy in the best way.

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica for Wellness Travel

Dry season runs from November through April, and it’s the window most people aim for. Reliable sun, warm temperatures, and the kind of weather that makes every resort photo look like it was taken on purpose. This is peak season for Guanacaste and the Pacific coast, so book early if you care about specific room categories at the Four Seasons , The Ritz Carlton Reserve, Nekajui or Nantipa.

Green season, roughly May through October, is underrated. It rains most afternoons, usually for an hour or two, and then everything goes back to being warm and absurdly lush. Rates drop. Crowds thin. Properties like Hacienda AltaGracia and Nayara actually feel even better in green season because the landscape is at its most alive and you have the place more to yourself. If your schedule is flexible and you don’t mind a brief afternoon downpour, this is when the value is strongest.

I’ve stayed at Nayara, Four Seasons Costa Rica and Nekajui, and I book Costa Rica often. I can help you decide which resort and room category actually fit your trip, then put the pieces together so the routing, transfers and experiences make sense too.

At eligible hotels, I can also book preferred rates and benefits through programs including Four Seasons Preferred Partner, Virtuoso and Marriott STARS.

Costa Rica Wellness Resorts: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best luxury wellness resort in Costa Rica?

It depends on what you need from the trip. Hacienda AltaGracia is the gold standard for deep, immersive rest and highly personalized wellness. Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, is the strongest luxury option for families who want a genuinely exceptional spa experience alongside beach time, beautiful design, and plenty to do. Nayara Tented Camp is the romantic choice for rainforest immersion and hot springs, while Nayara Gardens gives families that same sense of place in a more approachable setting. There is no single “best” without knowing what kind of tired you are.

Is Costa Rica good for yoga retreats?

Very. Yoga is woven into the wellness programming at many of Costa Rica’s best resorts, although the experience varies considerably. The Retreat offers the most structured rhythm of yoga, meditation, spa treatments, and nourishing meals. Hacienda AltaGracia is better for travelers who want a deeply personalized luxury wellness experience, while Nantipa pairs yoga with surfing, beach walks, and a more relaxed stay. If yoga is the main event, choose The Retreat. If you want yoga to be one beautiful part of a broader luxury vacation, AltaGracia or Nantipa may be the better fit.

What is a Blue Zone, and why does it matter for wellness travel?

Blue Zones are regions known for unusually high longevity, and Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula is one of the original five. That longevity is associated with natural daily movement, simple local food, strong social ties, a sense of purpose, and consistent rest. Resorts in and around the Nicoya Peninsula, including Nantipa, draw on that lifestyle through outdoor movement, fresh food, time in nature, and a less hurried pace. You do not have to study the philosophy. You simply begin to fall into its rhythm.

Can I take a wellness trip to Costa Rica with children?

Absolutely. Nekajui is the strongest luxury family wellness resort on the coast, particularly for families who want a spectacular spa, beach time, thoughtful children’s programming, and a real sense of occasion. Nayara Gardens is my favorite family choice for rainforest immersion, wildlife, and hot springs. Four Seasons Costa Rica also works extremely well for families who want an easy, polished beach vacation with excellent wellness facilities.

At all three, wellness folds naturally into the family experience rather than competing with it. Children can swim, hike, explore, and spot wildlife while parents make time for the spa, yoga, or the increasingly luxurious experience of finishing a cup of coffee while it is still hot.

How long should a wellness trip to Costa Rica be?

Five to seven nights is the sweet spot for most travelers. Hacienda AltaGracia and The Retreat benefit from at least five nights because the reset is gradual and it takes a few days to stop reflexively checking your phone. Nekajui works beautifully for five nights, especially if you want time for both the spa and the beach. Four nights at Nayara or Tabacón can still deliver a meaningful rainforest and hot-spring experience. For a longer trip, combining Arenal with Peninsula Papagayo creates a wonderful balance of jungle, wellness, adventure, and beach time.

How much does a luxury wellness trip to Costa Rica cost?

Rates vary considerably by resort, season, room category, and what is included. Most of the properties in this guide fall into the upper-luxury category, with many rooms and suites starting around $750 to $1,500 per night and rising well above that during peak periods. For a five-to-seven-night trip, couples should generally be comfortable with a hotel and experience budget beginning around $8,000 to $12,000, excluding international flights. Family trips, suites, festive dates, private transfers, and extensive spa or touring plans can cost considerably more.

Are there more affordable wellness resorts in Costa Rica?

Absolutely, but this guide focuses on Costa Rica’s best luxury resorts and high-touch wellness experiences rather than budget retreats, yoga hostels, or simple eco-lodges. My planning service is best suited to travelers considering one of the properties featured here and looking for help choosing the right resort, room, routing, transfers, and experiences.

Do you charge a planning fee for Costa Rica trips?

I do not charge a separate planning fee for trips booked through Sebastian Luxe Travel. I work with a select number of clients and am compensated by the hotels and travel partners I book. Because of that, I am best able to help with complete luxury hotel stays and thoughtfully planned itineraries rather than standalone research, points bookings, or searches for the lowest available online rate.

Can you find a discounted rate for one of these resorts?

I focus on securing the best overall value, which is not always the lowest room-only price. Depending on the property and dates, my clients may receive preferred-partner benefits such as daily breakfast, resort credits, upgrade priority, and personalized recognition. If price is the only deciding factor, a direct online booking site may be a better fit. If you want help choosing the right resort and making the stay feel seamless, that is where I am most useful.

How do I get to Costa Rica from the United States?

San José International Airport (SJO) and Guanacaste Airport (LIR) are Costa Rica’s two main international gateways. LIR is the easiest choice for Peninsula Papagayo, with Nekajui and Four Seasons generally about 35 to 45 minutes away. Arenal, including Nayara and Tabacón, can be reached from either airport, but travelers should expect approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours by road depending on traffic and conditions.

SJO is generally the better gateway for The Retreat and Hacienda AltaGracia. The Retreat is approximately 45 to 60 minutes from SJO. AltaGracia can be reached by a roughly three-and-a-half-hour private transfer or a short regional flight followed by a drive. Nonstop flights from New York generally take approximately five to six hours.
