Is W Costa Rica - Reserva Conchal worth it?
Yes, particularly if you want Costa Rica to feel like both a beach vacation and an actual trip.
W Costa Rica sits between Playa Conchal and the enormous Reserva Conchal nature reserve in Guanacaste, so you have beach, wildlife, golf and water sports without giving up good restaurants, a lively pool and a little personality. The hotel has just 150 rooms and suites, which also keeps it from feeling like a huge conventional resort.
I especially like it for couples, groups of friends and families with older children who want something more energetic than the classic beige luxury resort.
Is W Costa Rica good for families?
Yes, although it would not be my first choice for every family.
There is a Games Room with activities for children, a family-friendly pool, snorkeling, kayaking and plenty of nature and outdoor activities within Reserva Conchal. The hotel also has larger three-, four- and five-bedroom residences with private pools, which are excellent for families and multigenerational trips.
Where W really shines is with families who have school-age children or teenagers and want a resort that still feels fun for the adults.
For toddlers and very young children, I would compare it with some of Costa Rica's more traditionally family-oriented resorts before deciding.
Is W Costa Rica an adults-only resort?
No. W Costa Rica welcomes families.
It does, however, have an adults-only WET Deck pool during most of the year. Marriott currently notes that the WET Deck becomes family-friendly during festive periods and Easter.
That balance is one of the things I like about the hotel. Families are welcome, but adults can still find somewhere that does not involve inflatable pool toys.
Is W Costa Rica all-inclusive?
Not automatically, but you can make it all-inclusive.
W Costa Rica normally operates like a traditional luxury hotel, with food and drinks charged separately. However, the resort currently offers an optional ALL-IN package that includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, beverages and most of its restaurants and bars. A premium upgrade is also available for additional beverages and dining experiences.
This is useful because you can choose between a traditional hotel stay and an all-inclusive experience depending on how you travel.
W Costa Rica or Westin Reserva Conchal: which is better?
These two resorts share Reserva Conchal, but they offer very different vacations.
The Westin is a much more traditional all-inclusive resort, with a huge lagoon-style pool and a larger selection of restaurants and family facilities. W is smaller, more design-forward and livelier, with 150 rooms and suites, an adults-only pool during most of the year, a beach club and a stronger food-and-cocktail scene.
I would generally choose W for couples, friends, honeymooners and families who care about design and atmosphere.
I would choose Westin if the priority is a straightforward all-inclusive family vacation.
Does W Costa Rica have a good beach?
Yes. Beach is actually one of W Costa Rica's biggest advantages.
The hotel sits directly on Playa Conchal, one of Guanacaste's most distinctive beaches, with the resort's Zona Azul Beach Club right along the shore. Guests can also kayak, snorkel and paddleboard from the resort.
If having a real beach is important to you, I think W has an advantage over several of the luxury resorts on Peninsula Papagayo, where the overall scenery can be spectacular but the beaches are smaller.
As always in Costa Rica, ocean conditions vary, so I would never promise perfectly calm water every day.
What are the best rooms at W Costa Rica?
W Costa Rica has only 150 rooms and suites, and every accommodation has a private balcony. Categories range from regular guest rooms to larger suites with significantly better views, and some of the top suites include private plunge pools overlooking the reserve.
There are also private three-, four- and five-bedroom residences with open-plan living spaces, kitchens and private outdoor pools.
For a couple, I would prioritize view and outdoor space.
For a family staying several nights, I would seriously consider whether a residence gives you more value than booking multiple hotel rooms.
Is W Costa Rica good for a honeymoon?
Yes, especially if you do not want your honeymoon to feel excessively honeymoon-ish.
You have a beautiful beach, an adults-only pool during most of the year, AWAY Spa, golf, water sports, a proper beach club and enough nightlife and music around the resort to keep things interesting.
I would choose W for a honeymooning couple who wants cocktails, excursions and a little energy.
If your vision involves almost complete seclusion and whispering staff appearing silently with chilled towels, I would probably look elsewhere.
How far is W Costa Rica from Liberia Airport?
W Costa Rica is approximately 62 kilometers from Guanacaste Airport in Liberia, or LIR. The hotel does not provide a complimentary airport shuttle, but private transportation can be arranged.
For most travelers staying in Guanacaste, LIR is the airport I would use rather than San José. San José International Airport is roughly 258 kilometers from the resort.
Costa Rica is much more enjoyable when your first day does not accidentally become a cross-country road trip.
Is W Costa Rica near Tamarindo?
Yes. Tamarindo Airport is only about 16 kilometers from W Costa Rica, and the resort describes Tamarindo and its beaches as being nearby.
That makes it relatively easy to head into Tamarindo for surfing, shopping, restaurants or a change of scenery.
I like having Tamarindo nearby without necessarily staying in Tamarindo. Those are two very different propositions.
Do you need a rental car at W Costa Rica?
No necesariamente.
There is enough at Reserva Conchal to fill several days, including Playa Conchal, pools, restaurants, AWAY Spa, an 18-hole golf course, kayaking, snorkeling and the nature reserve.
If you plan to take one or two excursions, I would generally arrange private transportation instead.
A rental car makes more sense if you want to independently explore Guanacaste, visit several beaches or spend significant time outside the resort.
Is W Costa Rica good for golfers?
Sí.
Reserva Conchal Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-71 Robert Trent Jones II course stretching 7,021 yards through the coastal landscape. The club also offers a driving range, instruction and equipment rentals.
It is a particularly good choice when one person wants a legitimate golf vacation and the other person has absolutely no intention of touching a golf club.
Is W Costa Rica a party hotel?
Not in the spring-break sense of the word.
There is more energy here than at many luxury Costa Rica resorts. W programs DJ sets and live music, the Living Room stays open late, Zona Azul hosts pool parties and the adults-only WET Deck has a much livelier atmosphere than the average luxury-resort pool.
But you are still surrounded by a large nature reserve and one of Guanacaste's prettiest beaches.
I would call it social rather than chaotic.
W Costa Rica or Andaz Peninsula Papagayo: which is better?
I would choose W if the beach itself matters, you prefer a livelier atmosphere and you like having Tamarindo relatively close.
I would choose Andaz Peninsula Papagayo if you want to be within Peninsula Papagayo, prefer a quieter nature-driven resort experience and want access to its beaches, marina and broader resort amenities. Andaz currently has both family and adults-only pools, a beach club and extensive nature and wellness programming.
Both are excellent, but W feels more playful and beach-oriented. Andaz feels more tucked into the landscape.
Is W Costa Rica good for a multigenerational trip?
It can be an excellent choice, particularly if you book one of the residences.
The private residences have three, four or five bedrooms, expansive living areas and private pools, while everyone still has access to the restaurants, beach club, spa, golf and resort activities.
That gives grandparents, parents and children plenty to do separately, which is one of the great secrets of a successful multigenerational vacation.
Togetherness is lovely. Twenty-four-hour togetherness is a different product entirely.
