Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort is the only Rosewood in Hawaii, set on 81 acres of black lava and palm along Kahuwai Bay on the Kona Coast of Hawaii Island. It stands on the footprint of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village and the beloved original resort that opened in 1965, closed after the 2011 tsunami, and reopened in July 2023 following a careful, decade-long rebuild. There are no televisions in the rooms, and you will not miss them.
A day here follows the light. Mornings begin with breakfast at Moana and a slow walk to the water, where the bay is calm enough to swim straight off the sand. Afternoons drift between two pools, the Asaya Spa, and the shade of your own lanai. As the sun drops, the Shipwreck Bar fills up, dinner runs long at communal tables with your toes in the sand, and you fall asleep to the surf a few steps from the door. It feels less like a hotel and more like a village you have been let into.
The Kahuwai Bay Rhythm
Arrival and ease. Kona International Airport is about a 15-minute drive away, and a complimentary house car handles the transfer, so the resort is on island time before you have unpacked.
A village of standalone hales. All 150 accommodations are freestanding hales spread across 81 acres, each at least 600 square feet with a private lanai and an outdoor shower, laid out on the same footprint as the village that stood here before.
How it balances. The freestanding hales give a family its own compound and a couple complete privacy, while the calm, swimmable bay means even young kids are in the water within minutes.
Dining and amenities. Two ocean-view restaurants anchor the food, Moana for Pacific-to-plate dinners and the casual Kahuwai Cookhouse, alongside two outdoor pools, the Asaya Spa, tennis courts, a fitness center, and a cultural center.
The Spirit of Kona Village
Setting. The resort sits on Kahuwai Bay amid black lava fields softened by palms, a short way up the coast from the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.
Design. Hawaii-raised architect Greg Warner of Walker Warner Architects led the rebuild, with raised thatched hales and a cluster of crab-claw sails by sculptor Kaili Chun, called Pe'a, floating above the tables at Moana.
Capable hospitality. The original Talk Story Bar returns by name, and many guests rebook the exact hale they stayed in before, a sign of how closely the team holds the property's history.
Things to do. Snorkeling and ocean sports run off the beach, alongside tennis, bikes, and a cultural program rooted in the history and practices of the land it sits on.

For the right traveler, very much so. Kona Village is one of the most distinctive luxury hotels on the Big Island because it does not really feel like a hotel. Accommodations are spread across an 81-acre oceanfront property in individual hales and larger kauhale, with lava fields, palms and the Pacific between them. It is especially good for travelers who care about privacy, design, space and a strong sense of place more than having a conventional resort tower with everything clustered around a lobby.
Is Kona Village good for families?
Yes, and particularly for families who like a little independence. There is a family pool, beach, Rosewood Explorers Keiki Club, cultural programming and plenty of outdoor activities, including snorkeling, canoeing, tennis and pickleball. The two-bedroom kauhale are also a major advantage for families who want real space rather than two standard hotel rooms down a hallway from each other.
That said, if your ideal family vacation involves eight pools, a very structured kids' program and constant activity, nearby Four Seasons Hualalai may be the stronger fit. Kona Village has a quieter rhythm.
How does Kona Village compare with Four Seasons Hualalai?
This is probably the most important Big Island hotel question.
Kona Village feels quieter, more private and more design-driven, with standalone hales spread throughout the property. Four Seasons Hualalai feels more like an established luxury resort, with an enormous range of pools and recreational facilities, including eight pools and its well-known golf program.
I tend to favor Kona Village for couples, honeymooners and families who want space and privacy. I would lean toward Four Seasons Hualalai for serious golfers or families who want a larger menu of resort activities. They are close neighbors, but the vacations feel surprisingly different.
Can you swim at the beach at Kona Village?
Yes, although I would choose Kona Village for the total coastal setting rather than because you are searching for Hawaii's single best swimming beach. Kahuwai Bay is used for swimming, snorkeling, paddling and other ocean activities, and the resort provides non-motorized equipment including snorkel gear, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.
If having extremely calm, sandy, toddler-friendly ocean swimming is your number-one priority, I would compare Kona Village with some of the other Kohala Coast resorts before booking.
What are the best rooms at Kona Village?
This is one property where room location matters almost as much as room category.
The hales are standalone accommodations rather than conventional hotel rooms, and options range from more garden- and mountain-oriented locations to beachfront and oceanfront hales. Families and groups should look closely at the larger kauhale, including two- and four-bedroom options. Some signature residences add private pools, hot tubs, kitchens and butler service.
I would not automatically book the most expensive category. The better question is whether you care most about privacy, direct beach access, sunset views, proximity to the pools or having more living space. This is exactly the sort of resort where getting the room category right makes a noticeable difference.
How far is Kona Village from the Kona airport?
Kona Village is approximately 10 miles north of Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole, so the transfer is pleasantly easy by Hawaii standards, usually around 15 minutes depending on traffic. The resort can also arrange private airport transfers for an additional charge.
Translation: you can land in Hawaii and be holding something cold near the Pacific remarkably quickly.
Do you need a rental car at Kona Village?
Not necessarily. If you are coming primarily to enjoy the resort, you can very happily stay put. Kona Village has multiple restaurants and bars, pools, a spa, tennis and pickleball, water sports, cultural activities and a surprisingly long list of things to do without leaving the property.
I would rent a car, or arrange private touring, if you want to spend meaningful time exploring Hawaiʻi Island. The Big Island deserves its name, and Volcanoes National Park is not something you casually pop over to between breakfast and a massage.
Is Kona Village all-inclusive?
No. Kona Village is a traditional luxury resort rather than an all-inclusive property. Dining, spa treatments and many private experiences are additional.
There is currently a nightly resort fee that includes a substantial collection of amenities, such as non-motorized water sports and snorkel equipment, selected canoe experiences, access to the Asaya Spa facilities, tennis and pickleball, bicycles, the Rosewood Explorers Keiki Club and selected cultural activities.
What is there to do at Kona Village besides sit by the pool?
Quite a lot, which is part of what makes the resort interesting for a longer stay. Guests can snorkel, paddle, take sailing canoe excursions, play tennis or pickleball, use complimentary bicycles, join cultural activities and visit the resort's archaeological sites and cultural center. There is also an on-site farm that supplies produce to the resort's restaurants.
You can absolutely spend four days reading beside the pool. You just cannot blame Kona Village for that decision.
Is Kona Village good for a honeymoon?
Very. In fact, this is one of the Big Island hotels I would look at first for a honeymoon or anniversary trip. The standalone hales create far more privacy than a traditional hotel corridor, the resort is quiet without feeling sleepy, and you have excellent spa, dining and ocean experiences without needing to schedule every hour of the trip.
For couples choosing between Kona Village and Four Seasons Hualalai, I would usually start with Kona Village if romance, privacy and atmosphere are the priorities.
